Waiting Game

It was a bad week for us. The car just went bonkers and our plan to go somewhere last Friday was cancelled. Plus our budget is already tight as is it. We can only imagine how much money we need to have the car fix. And then there's Christmas. What do you do when you dont have any budget for it?

So come Saturday we planned a trip to Bristol to get something. Riding the bus is a first time for my son and he loved it a lot. The freedom from the car seat strap made him happy during the trip.

The shop where my my son's father need to go is small so we decided to just wait outside. Few meters away from a the shop is where the church ruins that we visited before. We walked and played with the leaves on the ground. We also collected some for a craft project. We put the biggest leaves that we can find in our bag.

We stayed in that same area. When my son's father took a bit longer we decided to venture further and I am so glad we did because its just pretty there.

At the back of the ruins are this cute sculptures. My son called the one at the end a blackberry.

And even further are grasslands that has so many interesting features like a band stand, graffitied walls, a fountain and a play area with so much sand and amazing wood play equipment.

It was a nice time. Something to cheer us up when our spirit are down and out. To make you forget about Christmas and all the other hassles of life and just feel the breeze on your face and feel the sun on your skin.

Book Love

We went to collect a book from Waterstones in Bristol for my son. Traffic is SO SO bad. I think a lot of people are already doing their Christmas shopping so all of the parking in the area are full. We went round and round but was not lucky to get any space. We got off of the car to go to the bookstore while son's Dad ventured farther to look for parking.

Its so easy to collect the book. We stayed a bit inside the bookstore but my son want to read his book already so we went out to look for a bench for him to read his phonics. Luckily we found this park! We have been going in this area so many times and yet I didnt know this park is in here! Amazing how we can always discover new places everytime even if we have been here so many times already!

The park has (ruins)church called St. Peter. It is locked so we cant see the interior but looking at it from the outside it looks interesting! My son took his book out and he started reading it. After reading and asked if I can take photos of the park and he said yes but he wont let me the book safe in the bag!

He is just holding it and singing the lyrics of the phonics songs in there while walking around the park.

The Church bears the name of the Civilians and Personnel who died when there was an air raid in the area during 1940-1944. What an amazing history!

As it was raining before we head out we have a wellies with us. It did not rain. But theres a fountain to use the wellies!

Few meters away from where my son is playing is this!

An ice rink that we want to try but a bit pricey for our budget. When we got back in the car he asked for his new book right up and we read it out loud while singing the songs. Before we knew it we are at home. Time flies!

Video of that day created by my cellphone

I am so happy that my son is slowly loving books and reading. Before his love for books is limited to when the book has got traffic signs and/or cars in it.
But now he is interested in different books. And its a bonus that he can read them now by himself. This is something that I am so proud of. Seeing a child reading a book is an ordinary sight but looking at them deeper, this activity is pretty amazing. Something is happening to their brain, their mind. Books for me is a trigger for them to learn, understand and imagine just as it is to me before. And maybe cope. Books saved me before at a very young age. When my father is drunk at night I would curl up with a book. And I can escape from the room where there is someone shouting outside to a place where there are dragons and unicorns. And where beasts and villains never ever win.

Soft Play Promise

Half term! FInally! A vacation that I cant get till my son started school. A really well deserved break.

And what better way to start it than to give my son his request! See we have been telling him that if he will eat in the school hall (he doesnt like eating lunch in school), attend his tennis lesson (he doesnt join in the class) and just be an all around good boy we can go to his fave place in the whole wide earth.

And he did try. Everyday. Before we go to school he would give me alibis to not eat in the hall but he will go and eat his lunch. Same as his tennis class! The coach is happy to announce that he is joining in the games now and not just seating in the bleachers. I am so proud that he is trying!

His fave place> Soft play area. So after his class off we go! And what a promising journey! We saw our first rainbow as a family!

Here he is playing. The soft play area is empty just us and 2-3 other kids! He is so happy everytime he is there and whats even better is that this is his prize for being so good and trying things that he doesn't fancy!

I love you Sebastian and thanks for being a good boy! You truly deserve this trip!

School Run With A Scarecrow

Being it a Friday, uniforms will be washed and my son had a rough week (because of me), I decided that a walk in the beach and not just the prom is needed to revive us both! It is starting to get cold now and yet walks in the prom and the beach is still berable with thick jackets.

When we arrive we notice a demolition works is in progress. Suddenly the beach is wider and I realized that they torn down the sandsculpture already! Some of the statues are still there. I dragged my son to go and explore the remaining sculptures and I got a 'But Mum it said Keep Out'.

I promised him that we would walk faraway from the pile of wood as they are a bit sharp and he happily walked with me to the beach while eating his snack. There are some mother child playing in there already. The sand is a bit hard but not impossible to break. We helped the demolition people!

It so much fun to walk in there! Like we are walking in ruins full of broken statues! We werent able to see this guys standing up as the entrance fee was a bit steep four our budget so we are making the most of what we can play with here.

This broken Lion is a nice bench to eat your snack!

The sunny weather made the walk in the beach more bearable too!

And after eating his snack my son decided that there are too much crows and the beach needs a scarecrow! Dont know if its effective though as there is one few meters away from here in that photo!

Last part of our school run is this fountain! I have never seen it with the water this clear and if not for the weather I would have let my son play in there. So we just threw a pence and made some wishes.

Really a lovely afternoon. Made me appreciate the place where we live. This is a bad week for us but everything seems better after this walk.

Happiness is Ikea Meatballs

As we are having a hard time for my son to eat in his school cafeteria we decided to try to inject it on our lives. Canteen style eating! We started with Ikea. They have what we are looking for array of food to choose from and tray system of ordering.

He is so excited and is showing us the process of ordering from the restaurant! Leading us in the line.

He chose meatballs and french fries with a bit of gravy. And some milk from their drink's dispenser. I am so happy that he was able to show of his new found ordering skills that he learned from just 5 days of (trying) to eat in school.

My son showed us how to eat too, with gusto! With this I am hoping that he will be more comfortable in the next days in eating at his school cafe. This wont be the last of course. I also found out that Tesco Cafe's have the same of system so we will try to eat there as well in the next days.

Here are our photos from the Ikea Cafe.

Here he is excited!

But patiently waiting for his turn

Leading us on what to do next.

Eating his order with gusto!

Sorry for the blurry photo but I just love his smile here and his sunburned face!

Happy with the free milk.

He finished his meal fast!

And being a traffic sign obsessed boy he notice this chair has a NO STOPPING SIGN hidden in it.

I am really struggling with this starting in big school gig. I am trying my best in ways that I know would help my son adjust better in school. I know that we still have a long way to go but I will of course continue to try harder. Hopefully this plan of exposing him to things like this would make it easier for him to learn. Hopeful as always.

Disclaimer: We were not paid to do this post we just really love to eat there in Ikea.

Time For School

My son started foundation year Last Friday. We were up early and he got dressed up and I was so happy that he is all smiles while we were doing so. He got a bit sad that Daddy was not staying and needs to go to work but when he started playing he got back to his usual happy self. And I was able to do those first day of school photos.

We head out to walk and we have tostop every so often every time he would see something interesting like a bug and a dandelion. He is also amazed and is aware now of other kids wearing uniforms and going to theirrespective schools.  We met mothers who we know and congratulated and gave us good luck as they know its his first day. Before we know it we were running out of time and I was so worried that he will be late on hsi first day that I asked him to walk faster and he did! We walk/jog/run to his school and WE GOT THERE ON TIME. When every one is going inside their room! WHEW! I gave him his kit and his bag and no drama at all. He went in with the school principal who knows his name which is awesome right?!!!

Sadly I werent able to get photos of him cuz we are just in time. But while walking home I realized how lucky I am to have him as a son. Like a really Eureka moment. I know that he is a good boy but that day is different. He cooperated even in running to go to school. The walk is short but we really are talking and he is so sunny and positive.

He just went with the flow and he is good at it! I did not hear complaining and protest!

And I suddenly felt dramatic. My little boy is really not so little boy anymore! HE is growing up! As he is good when I picked him up I told him we can go wherever he wants. I was expecting playground but he took his time in thinking. I thought that we are just going home but when we pass by the town hall where the library is he said he wanted to go in.

Inside we read a lot of books. Big ones and small ones and he found a book about machines and roadworks! He is in love with roads and signs and cars! If you will scroll up at the 5th photo where he is holding his bubble wand you will see in the photo (right side) a driving learner's book. That is his. His fave book that we read almost everyday. So when we found this book it is perfect for him and he never let it go. He read it with me and read it by himself. It is about people doing road works and the sound thats involve in doing it…

… which inspired this video.

On the way out there were given gummy candies as a prize for being good students. He doesnt like eating them so he is just playing with them and he gave me the gummy rong! Mummy wear this! And I did!

It was an awfully nice day! I am so happy that my son is a happy quirky kid. We are going to do this walk everyday of course and it going to be an routine for us. Going to school will be part of our weekdays, something ordinary. But I will make sure to treasure every moment because I dont want to forget quirky little things that my son and I do and share. Like this little gummy candy ring.

Last Day Of Summer

Weekend is a bit lazy for us. In my mind I was thinking of doing something great and unforgettable like going camping on the farthest place with the bestest things to do like kayak and my stuff. But we spent our last week of summer vacation here in our bakyardish. Morning was spent walking on the beach. My son playing with the sand and us just being cold from the wind.  Really ordinary. I think I have a post (or 2) about our beach.

Really windy that we head home few minutes after. I am so amaze of the kids who are bathing in this weather (there are quite a few)! kids really do have their own heater. I want one of those!

And we pass by an amazing car show event. With 2 boy who can resist the gleam of these vintage cars.

Son dragged me to his fave. He had got an expensive taste. A jaguar. He would circle around it and touch it. I was actually scared that the owner would tell him off but he just went round and round and no one reacted negatively. Nice.

Then he played and played while Daddy is looking for his fave.

As a Sunday treat we ate to Burger King. Yes it is a treat to us hehe. We are cheap what can I say!

After getting some food we head out for a short drive to Backwell Lake. Been a while since we went here and its nice to see lush greens around. There is this island in the middle of the lake. I always imagine Abney and Teal to live there. Son fed the ducks with few of the biscuits we have.

While of course I took photos. I love this one of the shadows of trees on the grass and the water. Its just so pretty. Nature creates such amazing beautiful scene. I feel so lucky to be able to witness it.

We always have a spare clothes for son for when he decided to take a dip on fountains. He wants to swim here but he is not allowed. This is the next best thing! Play and touch the water.

While walking my inquisitive eye caught this! Blackberries!!!!! If you are one of the blogs that I have commented on linky you will know that it is my dream to do a pick your own fruit gig. But we dont have any farm near us that offers that. And I am so delighted that we can do it for free. There was some itchy leaves there but who cares. Son is really careful and husband and I immensely enjoyed picking the black ones!!!

When we are all scratching already we stopped. We got an okay amount for a short time. And this is a summer bucket list ticked off! For free! Unexpectedly! And a bit of scratching my son went back to stalking that animals. Like this massive swan. I am actually scared but I guess the swans are use to being stalked already.

3 tired but happy souls boarded the car to go back home. Simple day really, ordinary yes but really really nice and (blackberry) rewarding one.

Music and Play

Saturday was a bit gloomy but it did not stop us from going out. Weekends are the only days that we get to spend as a family lately so were taking all the opportunity when we have the chance. We just went near the house. A park where there are a small music fest. I notice before that son loves live music that I am always in the lookout for one for him to see. The duo was setting up when we arrive and we are lucky that there's a space for kids to play to kill time while adults are watching and listening to the music.

Son just went to the play area and played by himself. Sometimes he would play with me or his Dad. And with the other kids in there too. Ordinary. But to me this is something special. As before when Sebastian is younger he would never ever share a toy or a play with any other kids. He is so possesive of his space and toys (even if its not his) and this frustrates me. I thought it would last forever but now he is so mature. He plays like everyone is his best friend! And most of all he shares toys! I am so proud.

With the maturity comes the appreciation of music. As a toddler too he would never stay in one place and is always on a run mostly from me. Look at him now listening and watching the show! My little boy is growing up.

Solstice Snapshots

We had an invitation for another camping trip. But we have so many chores to do. We also have not much money (and its still few more days before payday, YIPES!) to go out far so we declined the invitation and just decided to stay home. We are really lucky to live in the town and be exposed to many events like the Armed Forces Day and Weston Air Day. Two events in one day! Whats nicer is that we can still do chores and just go back out when the activity that we like is on.

After cleaning the house we went to see a parade.

Afterwards this captured our attention. 3 massive canons on the beach! Awesome!

And the best part is that they fired it! Lots of times!!!!

My son is not impressed though. What he wants is to play on the sand only.

Men in uniform who are gracious for a photo op with my kid, yes please.

And my turn to have a photo op with those massive canons! OMG! Bad hair day much =P

We went home as my son is a bit cranky (see photo above). Its probably the heat. We went home to eat lunch and for him to rest. When it really got hot we went to the fountain and let him bathe. Free!

After the free bathing we then head back to the beach to see this spectacle (while eating food from our pantry)!
The Red Arrows swirling in the sky!

After a magical day planes and fountains we went home to batch cook and rest. But it was the longest day of the year! We cant waste it sitting at home right? So we head out again to the beach and this time its empty and everything is close and we have the place for ourselves! This time an ordinary moment, us walking to empty streets. No planes, not much people. Just ordinary walk at night but pretty marvelous as we are together.

And when we are ready to call it a day, we went home. Tired, exhausted. It is really a long day for us.
And we are glad that we live here.

Where the events that are as magical as these are free.
And we don't need to spend a lot to enjoy the day.

And ordinary nights are ours.
Simple walks and chats on the beach to settle us down.

See you again tomorrow.

Camping preparation was chaotic as I am clueless on what to bring and what not to bring. I don't want to overdo it but I dont want to forget things that are needed the most. In the end we went out of the door wishing that we have everything we need to have a decent camping experience. First for all of us =)

We met up with friends whom we will go camping with. Not only our first camping out but also a first for me to spend an overnight stay with someone who is not a member of my family. Scary much.

Then we head to the camping site. We arrive there and the sky was gloomy. I am wishing it wont rain as I don't want to walk on soggy grounds.  Good thing that it all ended with a gloomy sky. We even manage to have a long walk before the sunset and saw a pretty sunset on higher ground. The rain did not arrive and it was a nice night to start the fire. Start the fire we did! It was big and warm and we toasted mallows and the kids run around it.

I am also glad that the child of the our friends are nice. She is the nicest and the most patient towards my son who is so into her. They just played and played like there's no age gap between them. With the crackling of the wood are laughter of 2 kids playing. What a nice night it was. Knowing that the kids are okay me and the other Mum just talked about life. A first time for me to be comfortable in a setting like this. The most intimate setting for me.

Night time came and I need to bring my Sebastian to sleep. Then the problems arise. I forgot to bring my contact lens solution and case. No glasses for me as well. So when I took it off I can no longer join the adults outside cuz I can no longer see anything especially in the dark even when there's fire. I also realized that I did not bring proper blankets. 2 thin fleece blanket is not enough to give me and my son warmth inside the tent.

I sat there cold as I need to share the blanket with my son. Him being the priority had the thick ones. Its like winter for me all over again. Other than that everything is okay.

The next day is a bit hard too. With me almost blind, I did not enjoy the morning activity. Fathers Day was spent in a carboot sale but I cant see the wares being sold. So there. I am just being dragged from one place to another. I am a bit embarrassed with the other family. They probably think I am not enjoying it but its really just hard to not see things well.

We then went home tired. But we will do this again and I know better the next time!

I want to do this again and correct the things! We will do this again cuz in spite of the things we forgot to bring as  camping is really nice! A real fun for my son and playing with her new found friend.
